A Three-Day Navagraha Temple Tour from Kumbakonam

Exploring the Sacred Planetary Temples of Tamil Nadu

Visiting the Navagraha temples in and around Kumbakonam is a deeply spiritual journey.

Over three days, we followed an organized itinerary that covered all nine Navagraha temples along with several iconic temples of the region.

Here is a brief account of every temple we visited, with a few words on the unique significance of each of these temples.

Day 1 – Trichy, Srirangam & Thanjavur Region

Uchi Pillayar Temple, Malaikottai – Trichy

We started our trip visiting the obstacle remover Lord Ganesha. Located atop the Rockfort hill, this temple offers sweeping views of Trichy city.

Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple – Srirangam

One of the largest temple complexes in India, dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Ranganathar. The Rajagopuram of Srirangam stands at 72 meters (236 feet), making it the tallest gopuram in India.

Jambukeswarar Temple – Thiruvanaikaval

A famous Pancha Bhootha Sthalam representing water, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Jambukeswarar. The underground water spring inside the sanctum is a unique feature of this temple.

Mariamman Temple – Samayapuram

This temple is revered for the powerful goddess Mariamman, known for curing ailments. Thousands visit every week to seek her blessings for health and protection.

Evening

On the way to Tanjore (Thanjavur) we made a brief stop at the Kallanai dam.

Brihadeeswara Temple – Thanjavur

A UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 CE. The massive Shiva lingam and towering vimana make it one of India’s most awe-inspiring temples.

Aiyarappar Temple – Thiruvaiyaru

Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Aiyarappar, this temple sits beside the banks of the Cauvery. The town is closely associated with the saint-poet Tyagaraja, one of the Trimurtis of classical Carnatic music.

Chandra Navagraha Temple – Thingalur

The Moon temple dedicated to Kailasanathar with a special shrine for Chandran. Devotees visit for emotional balance and relief from mental stress.


Day 2 – Navagraha Temples Around Kumbakonam

Guru (Jupiter) – Alangudi

The Apatsahayeswarar Temple is considered the holiest for Guru. Worship here is believed to bring wisdom, prosperity, and family harmony.

Rahu – Thirunageswaram

At the Naganathaswamy Temple, the famous Rahu milk abhishekam turns blue. It is particularly visited for relief from Rahu doshas and serpent afflictions.

Uppiliappan Temple – Thirunageswaram

A Vishnu temple where salt is not used in offerings, symbolizing purity. One of the 108 Divya Desams.

Surya (Sun) – Sooriyanar Koil

The only temple where all Navagrahas have individual shrines and the main deity is planetary god Suryan. The Sun here is worshipped for vitality, success, and health.

Sukra (Venus) – Kanjanur

At Agneeswarar Temple, Venus is believed to reside as Shiva Himself. The temple is popular for blessings related to relationships and financial well-being.


Evening

Swaminatha Swamy Temple – Swamimalai

One of the Arupadai Veedu temples of Murugan. Murugan is believed to have explained the meaning of “OM” to His father, Shiva, here.

Dhenupureeswarar Temple – Patteeswaram

This serene Shiva temple is known for its beautiful Rajagopuram and historical connections to the Cholas.

Airavatesvara Temple – Darasuram

A UNESCO World Heritage Site from the Chola era. Its stone carvings and musical steps reflect masterful craftsmanship. However we could not go near the musical steps as it was fenced for protection.

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple – Kumbakonam

The main temple of Kumbakonam where Shiva is worshipped as Kumbeswarar.

Sarangapani Temple – Kumbakonam

A significant Divya Desam dedicated to Lord Vishnu.


Day 3 – Chidambaram & Coastal Navagraha Circuit

Kalyanasundareswarar Temple – Thirumanancheri

People come here to seek the blessings for early marriage.

Angaraka (Mars) – Vaitheeswaran Koil

The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as the divine healer. Angaraka worship here is believed to cure diseases and remove Mangal dosha.

Thillai Nataraja Temple – Chidambaram

One of the most sacred Shiva temples depicting Him as the Cosmic Dancer. The concept of space (Akasha) as an element is symbolized here.


Evening

Budha (Mercury) – Thiruvenkadu

The Swetharanyeswarar Temple is known for Budha worship, supporting education and communication.

Ketu – Keezhaperumpallam

The Naganathaswamy Temple houses Ketu as a serpent deity. People visit for relief from nagadosha.

Amirthakadeswarar Temple – Thirukkadaiyur

Associated with the legend of Markandeya who overcame death. The temple symbolizes longevity and protection from untimely events. Hence people come here to perform Shastiapthapoorthy & Bheemarathasanthi.

Shani (Saturn) – Thirunallar

One of the most visited Navagraha temples, dedicated to Lord Shani. Devotees believe worshipping here removes the hardships.

We also visited the following temples outside the original itinerary.

Thirupungur – Sivalokanathar Temple

This Shiva temple is famous for the legend where Nandi moved aside to give Nandanar a direct darshan of the Lord.

Konerirajapuram – Uma Maheswarar Temple

This ancient Chola temple is known for its stunning bronze sculptures, including the magnificent Nataraja in an exceptionally graceful pose.

Govindapuram – Vittala Rukmini Temple

This beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Vittala and Mother Rukmini, embodying the bhakti traditions of Pandharpur.

Tiruvidaimaruthur – Mahalinga Swamy Temple

One of the most significant Shiva temples in the region known for its large campus, and rich Chola architecture.

This three-day journey through the Navagraha temples was spiritually enriching and culturally fascinating. For devotees seeking planetary blessings and temple enthusiasts exploring Tamil Nadu’s architectural heritage, this itinerary provides a perfect blend of devotion, history, and beauty.
