Wind Cave is not only one of the oldest known caves but also among the longest, with over 160 miles of mapped passages.

The cave gets its name from a natural phenomenon of rapid air flows in and out of the cave through a small entrance like hole.

When we visited in June 2024, the cave was unfortunately closed to the public due to an ongoing elevator replacement project. As a result, we were limited to viewing the natural entrance and hiking the scenic Prairie Trail, a pleasant one-mile loop.

We had some wildlife sightings including a coyote and several bison near the park entrance, as well as numerous prairie dogs seen during our drive out of the park.

On the brighter side, we explored nearby attractions in the Black Hills region, including Custer State Park and the iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
