In October 2022, we undertook one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India — the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. The tour was arranged by SOTC with Heli Yatra being the local operator.
Nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, the Char Dham circuit includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, each carrying immense spiritual significance in Hindu tradition.
Experiencing the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes through helicopter travel combined with short treks and temple visits made the journey even more memorable.
Our trip began with arrival at Dehradun on September 30, 2022. Though weather delayed the start of the yatra by a day, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we were able to spend time in the spiritual towns of Rishikesh and Haridwar before beginning the pilgrimage.
Day 1 – Rishikesh & Haridwar
(October 1, 2022)
Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the Char Dham helicopter operations were postponed by one day. We used this opportunity to explore the holy towns of Rishikesh and Haridwar along the banks of the sacred Ganga River.
In Rishikesh, we visited the iconic Ram Jhula and trekked toward Lakshman Jhula, enjoying the serene river views, ashrams, and spiritual atmosphere that define this yoga capital of the world.
Later we traveled to Haridwar and took a sacred Ganga Snan before returning to Dehradun.
Day 2 – Yamunotri Darshan
(October 2, 2022)
Our actual Char Dham Yatra began with a helicopter ride to Kharsali, a beautiful Himalayan village surrounded by mountains.
From Kharsali, we undertook the 6 km journey to Yamunotri by goda (pony ride), passing through scenic mountain paths and waterfalls.
Yamunotri Temple
Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, Yamunotri is the first destination in the Char Dham circuit. The temple marks the spiritual source of the Yamuna River, one of the holiest rivers in India.
The temple, surrounded by snow-clad peaks, offered a divine and peaceful atmosphere. After darshan, we returned to Kharsali for our overnight stay. The accommodation was just basic.

Day 3 – Gangotri Darshan
(October 3, 2022)
The next morning we flew by helicopter to Harsil, one of the most picturesque locations in Uttarakhand.
From Harsil, we drove about 22 km to Gangotri Temple.
Gangotri Temple
Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and marks the sacred origin of the River Ganges in Hindu belief.

In the evening, we visited a nearby local village and experienced the simple lifestyle of the Himalayan people before returning to Harsil for the night.
Day 4 – Kedarnath Darshan
(October 4, 2022)
This was perhaps the most anticipated day of our journey. We first flew to Sersi and from there took another helicopter ride closer to Kedarnath Temple.
The spiritual atmosphere around Kedarnath was truly unforgettable. Despite the cold weather and high altitude(about 12000 feet), the devotion and energy of pilgrims created a deeply moving experience.
Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and among the holiest Shiva temples in India.
We also visited the nearby Shankaracharya Samadhi, dedicated to Adi Shankaracharya, who played a major role in reviving Hindu pilgrimage traditions across India.
A short trek took us to the Bhairav Temple, from where we enjoyed stunning panoramic views of the Kedarnath valley and surrounding mountains.

After completing darshan, we returned to Sersi for the night stay.
Day 5 – Badrinath & Mana Village
(October 5, 2022)
Our final dham was Badrinath, reached via another breathtaking helicopter journey through the Himalayas.
Badrinath Temple
Badrinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Badri Narayan. Located along the banks of the Alaknanda River, this temple is one of the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites in India.
The colorful temple front set amidst towering mountains created an unforgettable spiritual setting.

After darshan, we visited the nearby Mana Village, famously known as the “Last Indian Village” before the Indo-Tibetan border.
We also explored:
- Saraswati River Origin – A sacred and powerful stream believed to be the visible emergence of the Saraswati River.
- Ganesh Guha – A cave associated with Sage Vyasa dictating the Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha.
The combination of mythology, spirituality, and Himalayan beauty made this day especially memorable.
Day 6 – Return to Dehradun
(October 6, 2022)
We concluded our Char Dham Yatra with a helicopter ride back to Dehradun. Before catching our flight to Chennai, we visited the peaceful Sahastradhara Falls, known for its scenic surroundings.
As the journey came to an end, we carried back not just memories of temples and mountains, but also a deep sense of gratitude, peace, and spiritual fulfillment.
Though physically easier through helicopter travel, the spiritual impact of the yatra remained profound. Every dham had its own unique energy and significance, leaving us with memories that will stay with us forever.
