Amarnath Yatra-A Memorable Pilgrimage

Undertaking the sacred pilgrimage to Amarnath Cave (12,756 ft) had long been on our spiritual bucket list. In the second week of July, 2019, we finally embarked on this divine journey from Chennai, with the tour arranged by SOTC Travel Limited (Chennai).

This journey turned out to be especially significant in hindsight. Within a couple of weeks of our visit, the yatra was suspended following the revocation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, and subsequently, the pilgrimage did not take place for the next two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We were fortunate to have completed the yatra just in time.

Day 1: Chennai → Srinagar by flight

Srinagar → Pahalgam Distance: ~100 km | Drive Time: ~3 hours

We began our journey with an early morning flight from Chennai to Srinagar via Delhi. By noon, we arrived in Srinagar, where the SOTC guide received us and escorted us to a waiting minivan.

The drive to Pahalgam was scenic, with beautiful views of surrounding valleys. By late afternoon, we checked into Hotel The Wild Flower, where we stayed for the next two nights.

Day 2: Pahalgam → Panchtarni → Amarnath Cave → Return

This was the most important day of our journey.

We left for the helipad at 4:00 AM, although operations began only around 5:30 AM after verification of tickets, ID, and medical certificates (which we had obtained from our local doctor in advance).

Our helicopter, scheduled at 6:30 AM, took about 10–15 minutes to reach Panchtarni.

From Panchtarni, the holy cave is approximately 6 km away. Since we wanted to complete the darshan and return the same day, we opted for a palki service (₹7000 per person) instead of trekking.

  • Time taken to reach the cave:  about 1 ½ hours
  • Darshan date: July 15, 2019
  • Highlight: A full Ice Lingam, which made the experience truly divine

After offering prayers at the sacred Shri Amarnath Shrine, we returned to the helipad by 11:00 AM.

Return Journey

The return helicopter operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Tokens are issued, and passengers must wait for their turn. We waited for about 2 hours and boarded around 1:00 PM. Flights typically operate only until around 3:00 PM, depending on weather conditions.

Back at Pahalgam, we had lunch at one of the vegetarian restaurants near the helipad and returned to our hotel before 4:00 PM—just as the rain began.

Day 3: Pahalgam → Srinagar

After breakfast, we checked out and drove back to Srinagar.

We visited the famous Mughal garden, Shalimar Bagh & Nishat Bagh

In our opinion, visiting one garden would have been sufficient, as they offer similar layouts and experiences.

Dal Lake Experience

Later, we enjoyed a relaxing Shikara ride on Dal Lake, which lasted about 1.5 hours. The ride included:

  • Kashmiri traditional dress photo session
  • Interactions with floating vendors
  • Stops for handicraft shopping

We checked into Hotel Center Point for our overnight stay.

Day 4: Srinagar → Chennai (Departure)

After breakfast, we headed to Srinagar airport well in advance, considering the extensive security procedures. Before departure, we packed food from a South Indian restaurant at the airport, which proved useful during the journey.

Overall Experience

The Amarnath Yatra was a deeply spiritual and well-organized experience. SOTC Tours Chennai handled the logistics efficiently, ensuring a smooth journey throughout. While the cost was slightly higher compared to other operators, the reliability and comfort justified the price.

The Yatra is more than a pilgrimage—it is a profound spiritual experience set amidst the majestic Himalayas. The helicopter route via Panchtarni makes it accessible without compromising the sanctity of the journey.

Looking back, we feel especially fortunate to have completed this yatra just before an extended pause in pilgrimage activities. It made the experience even more meaningful and memorable.
