For spiritual seekers and those inspired by timeless yogic traditions, a visit to Babaji Cave in Uttarakhand, India, offers a profoundly blissful experience. This sacred site is linked to Mahavatar Babaji, an ancient yogi from the Himalayas, believed to possess an eternal body. His story was popularized globally by Paramahamsa Yogananda in his renowned autobiography, “Autobiography of a Yogi”.

Babaji is credited with reviving the science of Kriya Yoga and sharing it with the modern world through his disciple, Lahiri Mahasaya. The Babaji Cave area is particularly significant as it is where Babaji initiated Lahiri Mahasaya in 1861.

The Babaji Cave Experience
The primary activity at Babaji Cave is meditation, offering visitors a truly blissful experience.
The cave has specific operating hours:
- March to September: Open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- October to February (cooler months): Open from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Locating and Reaching the Sacred Cave
The Babaji Cave is situated near the village of Kukuchina, approximately 25 kilometers from Dwarahat in Uttarakhand. We took a car from Rishikesh and passed through Devprayag and Rudraprayag, before arriving at Kukuchina village. There are also tour operators who arrange 2-night/3-day trips from major cities like Delhi or Rishikesh.
From Kukuchina, we trekked about 2 kilometers along a mountain path to reach the Babaji Cave. This trek typically takes about one hour one way. While it is a steady ascent, the path is generally not that difficult. We have seen only a few individuals along the route.

Food and Accommodation Near the Cave
Visitors should be aware that there are no restaurants close to the parking area where the trek begins. However, one can pre-order home-cooked Indian vegetarian meals, such as hot flatbread (roti), spinach (palak), and lentil soup (dal), from a shop near the parking lot. This allows for a hot meal to be ready upon return from the cave.
For accommodation, there are a couple of options:
- Joshi Guest House: Located about 5 kilometers from Kukuchina village, this guest house offers basic facilities.
- Yogada Satsang Ashram (YSS Ashram) in Dwarahat: Situated about 25 kilometers from the cave, this ashram also provides accommodation. However, staying here is restricted to YSS members who have been members for at least six months.
The Yogada Satsang Ashram (YSS) in Dwarahat

The Yogada Satsang Society Ashram (YSS) in Dwarahat plays a crucial role in maintaining the Babaji Cave and its trekking route. This is a smaller ashram that includes a meditation hall, a temple, accommodation rooms, and a dining hall. The ashram primarily provides food only to its residents.
The YSS Ashram also conducts training classes established by Paramahamsa Yogananda annually. Their website indicates that travel to Babaji Cave can be arranged from the ashram itself. The ashram also features a book store.
A journey to Babaji Cave and the YSS Ashram offers a unique opportunity for spiritual reflection and a deeper connection to the teachings of these revered yogis.
